Last fall, a young woman named Amber* came to Alpha Women’s Center of Grand Rapids (AWC) pregnant with her seventh child and completely overwhelmed. She had just received heartbreaking news that her unborn baby was severely underweight and had a brain tumor.

Amber had been meeting with Kalie, her mentor, for several months. Since their first meeting, Amber had opened up about the struggles in her life. Kalie had provided encouragement and a listening ear, but as she sat across from Amber that day, she didn’t know what to say. All she could do was listen to Amber, encourage her, and pray.

Weeks went by, and Amber didn’t show up for her next appointment at AWC. Although Kalie called Amber numerous times, there was no response. She left a message emphasizing that whatever happened, Alpha was here for her. Kalie and the staff at AWC wondered if Amber’s baby had survived.

Three months later, Kalie received a message from Amber asking if she could meet with her that day. Kalie immediately agreed, while anxiously wondering what had happened since their last visit.

Two hours later, Kalie walked into the waiting room and saw Amber holding a beautiful baby boy. Holding little Cameron* tightly, Amber cried as she shared that her baby was born the night before, perfectly healthy and without a brain tumor! The doctors could not explain how this happened.

Kalie shared with Amber how the AWC staff had been praying for her and her baby. Amber thanked Kalie and tearfully said, “there’s no explanation for this; it had to be a miracle!”

At AWC, clients often come to us during a time of crisis. They might stay in our programs for weeks, months or years. During that time, strong relationships form between clients and mentors. When a client leaves suddenly, it’s difficult not knowing the rest of the story. However, our hope is that clients will know that we’re always here for them. In Amber’s situation, we’re so thankful she chose to come back and share her miracle with us.
